Sternwheelers passed through the area during the Big Bend Rush in the 1860's and settlement occurred in the 1870's. The first store was
owned by Frederick W. Jordan,
my Great Grandfather & opened
it's doors in 1892.
The Leland, is the oldest operating Hotel in B.C., and is still going strong. The S.S. Minto made her maiden voyage in 1898 and sailed on for 54 years. Up and down the lake land was sold to settlers who planted huge orchards. Events conspired against them. The Great War started the decline. The mines closed & the Kettle Valley Railway stopped. Politics & irrigation opened the Okanagan Valley for fruit production and the local orchards could not compete. Despite this, Nakusp emerged as the service centre for the region and plodded on.

The most influential and controversial event in Nakusp's history occured in the 1960's with the signing of the Columbia River Treaty, an agreement to sell electricity to the U.S. Land throughout the valley was expropriated by BC Hydro and flooded in 1969. This was a deathblow to the local farms and orchards. Nakusp was stagnated. Then the development of the Nakusp Hot Springs in 1974 brought tourism and played a big part in the local economy.

In the early 90's, tourism became #2 industry after logging. My Dad, Bob Murphy a Road Builder and his friend, Tad Derbyshire an Airlines Pilot, implemented Kootenay Heli Skiing & the Kuskanax Lodge which further enhanced, on a global scale, the awareness of our pristine surroundings. In 1996 Dad & Tad sold to CMH, Canadian Mountain Helicopters that have expanded, building another lodge in the mountain area. Halcyon Hot Springs was developed in 1998 and will also, aide in the increase of knowledge to the area. Hundreds of people moved to the area to enjoy the rural lifestyle and mountain scenery. Today Nakusp is experiencing a renaissance as more and more people discover the area. Indeed, our future is brighter than ever!
